Eagle | Poland

WHY EAGLE?

According to legend, Lech, the founder of the Polish state, saw a large nest on a tree while staying in the vicinity of Poznan. There was a white eagle, spreading its wings over the sky, red from the setting sun. Lech decided to settle there and placed an eagle in his coat of arms. He called the memorial place Gniezno (from the word nest).

The eagle is a national symbol of Poland, always present on seals and knights’ shields. It was also a symbol of important national uprisings during the partitions, under many years of foreign invaders’ rule.

That is why we have named our HPC machine at PSNC in honour of this unique symbol – the Eagle.

THE EAGLE SUPERCOMPUTER

Deployed at the beginning of 2016, it is one of the most powerful supercomputer systems in the world. It is an important element of large-scale computing for Polish science and business, which enables research, simulation, and analysis of problems that, due to their complexity, could only be considered in the largest computing centres.

Eagle has a performance of 1.4 PFlops computing power. It consists of 1300 compute nodes equipped with a total of 33,000 cores and 120 TB of operating memory (RAM), and can be connected to a 42 Petabyte storage disc. A computational task which would take approximately 1 year of work for a home PC laptop, Eagle can perform in 1 hour!

From mid-2023, the Eagle system supports cloud solutions.
